The Southdown Railway Co. is run by the South Hampshire 16mm and G Scale model railway group who are affiliated to Fareham and District Model Railway Club.

The layout is not based on any particular location but is intended to give a generalised view of narrow gauge trains in operation by running live steam and battery powered locomotives from around the world.  

Track is dual gauge, 'O' and '1' (32mm and 45mm), depicting railways from the 2 foot lines of Wales to the larger metre gauge of Europe and 3 foot 6 across the Americas.
