Middleton - Malcolm Hine This is a private layout belonging to
Malcolm who for many years was the exhibition manager for
the Ely and District Model Railway Club. Although he now
lives in Oxfordshire he remains a good friend and
honorary member and they still see him socially and at
exhibitions.
After many years modelling
in 009 firstly with his own layout The Llyfni
Valley Railway and more recently with the Ely
club's Abbots Dale, Malcolm felt the need for
a change to a larger scale. The layout plan is based on
Wantage from Iain Rice's inspirational book Light Railway
Layout Designs, and was initially produced as a small
scale cardboard mock-up.
Malcolm decided to set the
layout in his favourite location of North Derbyshire. In
his imagination the line runs from an interchange with
the Midland Railway at Bakewell via Baslow to Stoney
Middleton (6 miles), the operational headquarters of the
line. The mineral extension crosses through the main
street and wends its way up the one in thirty-five
gradients through Middleton Dale to the quarries at
Farnsley, which are the main reason for the lines existence.
Malcolm is
a member of the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association and Stoney
Middleton won the best layout in show at their 2001
convention at Loughborough on 12 May 2001.
