| Mointeach
na hInse Lia - Charles Insley Mointeach na hInse Lia is a typical
Bord na Mona narrow gauge railway that serves a working
peat bog in County Offaly in the Irish Republic. The
railway is 2 foot 6 inch gauge rather than the normal 3
foot gauge (some peat railways in County Donegal were 2
foot gauge).
One side of the layout
shows the bog in its natural state, whilst the other
shows the peat being harvested and the various machines,
home-produced, that do this. The peat is cut, goes for
domestic use, then rolled and conveyed to the local power
station.
The period is the early
1970's and most of the locomotives are diesel powered,
mainly of British manufacture, with some steam engines.
Freight wagons are specially designed for the peat
traffic.
The ruin at the rear of
the layout is the remains of St Brendons monestery,
which, one day, will become a tourist attraction.
